Successful TOUR stop in Brazil

Last month marked a significant trip to the South American agricultural powerhouse Brazil. In partnership with PariPassu – a Brazilian supply chain tech company and GLOBALG.A.P. Community Member – the GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat hosted a two-day TOUR stop in the southern city of São Paulo on 30–31 October.

Experts from the GLOBALG.A.P. Secretariat held fruitful discussions in a roundtable format with an estimated 250 participants representing the various actors in the agriculture supply chain. Members of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock were in attendance as well as representatives from PariPassu, and GLOBALG.A.P. Advisory Board member Enrique Ameghino from retailer Cencosud Peru.

GLOBALG.A.P. standards benefit Brazilian agriculture

Panelists discussed the impact of GLOBALG.A.P. standards across the nation, with smallholder producers and family farms explaining the value of certification in improving farm management and accessing higher value markets. Representatives from retailers such as Cencosud Peru and Grupo Pão de Açucar explained the benefit of GLOBALG.A.P. standards for responsible supply chain sourcing and traceability policies.

Participants also explored plans to promote increased rates of producer certification and regulatory alignment to GLOBALG.A.P. standards across Brazil. In particular, supply chain members expressed interest in increasing certification to GLOBALG.A.P. standards in order to expand Brazilian fruit and vegetable exports to new markets.

Consumer recognition

Experts from GLOBALG.A.P. c/o FoodPLUS also introduced the GGN label, a cross-category consumer label connected to GLOBALG.A.P. standards. The GGN label presentation focused particularly on the example of adding the label to seafood products, as well as explaining how the GGN label can offer an effective way to distinguish responsibly sourced products in a competitive market, with food safety and environmental sustainability driving consumer decision making.
